Anyone with a smidgen of Honolulu nightlife knowledge should be familiar with the DJ super collective Noctunal Sound Krew. The group’s name attached to any event means working up a sweat and not wanting to leave the club. For NSK founding member DJ Jami, being a DJ was in the stars. Having grown up with the influence of other DJs in his family, Jami started on the turntables as a child. He was already a veteran DJ on the world DJ competition circuit by the time he was in high school.
Having had the fortune of being exposed to international DJ and music styles so young, combined with a natural funk and swagger, Jami’s style evolved quickly and early, and he has garnered two world and three U.S. championship DJ titles. Lucky for us, Jami still likes to get down in the clubs when he’s not competing, and his sets are an expert mix of turntablism technicality and artistry. He takes everything from hip-hop, soul, ’80s, ’90s, Miami bass, house, Baltimore club, indie rock and regional club classics and mixes them with a slick turntablist sensibility. With regular residencies in New York City, Hallowbaloo provides another home-based Honolulu embrace for DJ Jami. And your ears and feet will be all the better for it.
