With their transformation aof beating rhythms into mandalas of light, the ladies of world-class fire dance troupe Kalalea Fire mesmerized Hallowbaloo audiences last year. With their powerful, feminine grace, Kalalea Fire of Kauai will put another hot spell on Oahu this Halloween.
The English translation of the Hawaiian term kalale‘a is “the sun that dances,” which is perfectly appropriate for the women who come together to worship the flame. Blending Tahitian, African, hip-hop and Middle Eastern dance with martial arts and hula, Kalalea has mastered the art of choreography, which is seamlessly woven with improvisation. This combination creates a show that is fluid and expressive in the moment, as well as interactive. The San Francisco Chronicle and People magazine have called Kalalea Fire’s performances the “highlight” of large events.
Whether with fire poi balls or flaming spinning hoops, Kalalea Fire will bewitch you with seemingly endless ribbons of dancing fire, leaping and licking at their ladies’ sides as if well-trained friends. See the beauty in the danger of the flame, the respect in dancing with the inferno, and aristry of Kalalea Fire.
